Subject

Description

A map of the coast of Virginia and present-day North Carolina (from Chesapeake Bay to Cape Lookout) with names of native American villages given in Algonquin. Cartographic details include dividers, scale, and compass rose. Also included is the royal arms of England. At upper right is the title of the map in a cartouche of strapwork surmounted by the Raleigh family coat of arms.
De Bry engraved the map after John White. It is the most accurate map of North America done in the sixteenth century. It shows the first printed use of the name Chesapeake (Chesepiooc Sinus) and the second use of Roanoke. This version probably corresponds to Burden's state 2 of the map. Theodor De Bry's America. Part I. English.
