A Mapp of New Jarsey

Title

A Mapp of New Jarsey

Subject

17th century New Jersey

Description

Map of New Jersey with inset view of New York City. Cartographic elements include scales, compass rose, rhumb lines, location of sea banks or shoals, and soundings. Also includes native American settlements or fortifications, dwellings, canoes, animals such as stag or deer, beaver, fox, weasel, or otter, and turkey, royal coat of arms of England, ships, gallows, windmill, church, and prison. Decorative cartouche is flanked by native Americans, one wearing a feathered headdress and holding a sword, the other holding a bow and arrow.
This map of New Jersey was the first to call it by that name. It may have been first produced in 1675, although Stevens and Tree (map 38) gives it the date 1664[?]. The atlas in which this map appears, however, was not produced until the 1670s.Seller's atlas is the first English maritime atlas and represents a significant stride in the growth of the English map trade over its Dutch rivals.
