Title

Carte que les Gnacsitares ont Dessiné sur des peaux de Cerfs ...

Subject

Map of the western Great Lakes and land west to the Rocky Mountains.

Description

Map of the western Great Lakes and land west to the Rocky Mountains. Cartographic elements include scale, degrees of latitude and longitude, location of native American settlements and European forts. Includes illustration of dwellings, canoes, and medals of the Tahuglauk.
The map purports to show the "Riviere Longue" (perhaps the Minnesota River) flowing from the Rocky Mountains into the Mississippi River. Lahontan traveled throughout Canada in service for the military in New France. His account of his travels was enormously popular, and his misconceptions about the geography of the Great Lakes region continued to be replicated throughout the eighteenth century.
