TERRESTRIAL LIBRARY GLOBE -- CORONELLI, VINCENZO (1650-1718)
Terrestrial globe, diameter 108cm, [gores Venice: c.1688]; stand Greaves and Thomas 1999]. The globe made up of 48 globe gores with two sets of calottes, hand-coloured and softly varnished, set in a reproduction Dutch style stand, heavy brass graduated meridian circle and hour ring, with brass support below, stained wooden octagonal horizon circle, recessed with hand-coloured horizon papers in 8 sections, the horizon supported by four turned ebonised legs with gilt-painted bands, ebonised bun feet, the legs united by oak cross-stretchers, and circular oak base plate with central globe support, width 154cm, overall height 184cm.
A very impressive globe standing almost 6 feet high made by one of the foremost modern globe makers in England. The gores are original Venetian papers of c.1688 (excepting the gore sheet for lower Chile, a facsimile). The stand although Dutch in style sets off the grandeur and decoration of the geography on the globe. Greaves and Thomas specialise in globes by Coronelli and their premises in Ryde, the Isle of Wight is planned to be a globe museum in the near future. Vincenzo Coronelli was the foremost map and globe maker of the 18th century. Born in Ravenna, he was the son of a tailor, learnt wood-cutting and joined the conventional Friars Minor in 1665 entering the content of S.Maria Gloriosa Friari in Venice in 1671. In 1689 he was commissioned to make a pair of 175cm diameter manuscript globes for Duke Ranuccio Farnese of Parma. Louis XVI then commissioned in 1681 to make an ever larger manuscript pair, 385cm the 'Marly globes'. By 1684 he had set up a globe making and map firm and a Geographical Society the Accademia Cosmographica degli Argonauti funded by subscriptions from nobility around Europe. Coronelli used Nolin in Paris to engrave his celestial gores, with Italian engravers in Venice, working on the terrestrial gores. His business was highly successful and he produced globes at 5, 8, 15, 47 and 108cm diameters. This globe is a modern celebration of the art of this extraordinary globemaker.
